Culture
Rank, discipline, and Advancement
As absolute ruler, Caesar leads the Legion with a legate directly beneath him, and the legate commands the centurions who front a few contubernia.
In an outpost (such as this), the Centurion takes the place of the Legate, as well as all their normal duties.
Contubernia are tent groups, travelling with their comrades to and from war. Each contubernia are led by one or two decani, and directly controlled by a centurion. Cooperative tent groups ensure the safety of legionaries during wartime.
Starkly divided by its hierarchy through utilitarianism, the position of a man in a rank is imperative to his reputation. He may be drawn into his rank by way of three methods:
Held by birthright. Blood is undoubtedly the surest way to admit oneself, and will often earn a subject the rank of legionary immediately.
A tribe, or profligate organisation, may be voluntarily (or forcibly) assimilated. This includes losing all of their culture and titles to become true men.
Enslavement, and the selection of slaves who may be fit for training.
Once young children, or inexperienced men, are deemed fit and able to become warriors, their training begins. Although training to become a legionary is fraught with hardship, pain, and decidedly dangerous, given the lax rules of the Legion's arena, it is pivotal to a boy's development. Often, young men are assigned to contend against must stronger men in battle.
When in war, young men and inexperienced recruits are marched to the front, wading through their enemies closely, with sparse knowledge of battle. Only the strongest and most vigilant legionaries are able to survive, or even excel. This allows the Legion to weed out the weaklings, and promote the survivors to prime legionaries.
Some individuals are able to distinguish themselves by being heroic and courageous, or tactical geniuses. Such as breaking ones post to capture a tribe via a hole in their defense.
Parenting
Sons of the Legion are the vestigial casings of new soldiers. A crop plucked from the teats of their mother, and handed over to the priestess women of the Legion.
Priestesses are charged with teaching children a love of Caesar, the culture, and the language. This ensures that, while they are minimally educated, the children are literate enough to regard their king with fanatic loyalty.
Once children are old enough, and deemed fit to begin their training, they are given to the Praeceptor, thenceforth who will raise them to the Legion's standard.
When an infant transitions to a child, a severance of its parental bond is required. The child is merely the sum of their genetics, and the parents are merely 'makers'. The elimination of the parental connection opens up possibilities for the child, as he must replace his parental favour with love of his king. Caesar is the true father of all children, regardless of biological bond.
The child is placed in training, and will spar openly. He is subjected to the Legion's soldierly culture (only after language has been mastered). The child may accompany the Praeceptor in petty field activities with other legionaries, or the Frumentarii, depending on which direction the child shows promise in.
The Praeceptor's sole duty is to strengthen and condition young children, until they are deemed fit to become legionaries. In order to learn the ins and outs of war, a legionary must partake in true battle.
If there are no present priestesses and/or Praeceptor, the children will enter a limbo state where legionaries and officers must step forward to claim the right to their development. They become mentors to the children, and claim children on a first come, first serve basis. If two or more wish to claim responsibility over the development of a single child, they must spar over the right, and afterward, teach the child to become a true man.
Justice and Punishment
Any man who is not a subject of the Legion is without moral restraint. He is a cheat, a liar, and his wife is a whore; he is not worthy of the Legion's purpose. This extends to all savage tribes and profligate groups beyond the Legion's borders, and those who cannot be rehabilitated.
If a man cannot see the stark beauty of the Legion's justice, and challenges the empire, he must be executed. Judgement will be passed on whether the profligate is capable of becoming a legionary, whether the Dissolute is fit for assimilation.
Due to its contradictory and hungry nature, the Legion claims the right to conquer any tribe it may previously have allied with, or promised to protect. By assimilating a tribe, the Legion is enforcing its much safer and proper culture, thus not breaking its promise to protect the tribe. However, this is only if they are deemed worthy to be part of the Legion's noble campaign.
Slavery
The Legion is a slave army, but call themselves 'subjects'. Although they seem willingly loyal to Caesar, they are not given a chance to join, or the freedom to leave. If they defect, or challenge the empire, they will face total enslavement or capital punishment.
Slave, wholly called this by the subjects, are profligates who have surpassed the stage of being captured. They are typically marked with the tenth numeral, the Legion's sigil; it is two large, intersecting marks, forming an 'X' across their forehead. This brands profligates with the mark of the Legion, signifies the empire's ownership. To ensure the longevity of the mark, as it begins to fade, it is cut back into their flesh until.
Within the Legion, labour is not necessarily a part of slave life. Nonetheless, slaves are withheld from the glories of war, and hold a dishonourable title. They are to be treated as filth, to remind them of their place. A slave is never to speak against his masters.
Slaves are capable of moving up the ranks if they are able prove themselves. He who wishes to be a man of the Legion must show how he is fit for service, but the way is strenuous and often left lesser tread; so slaves often remain at the lowest tier, beaten and rejected by the Legion.
Marriage
Overt sexism is not necessarily part of the Legion's everyday life. Some particular men may be misogynistic of their own accord, seething with person hatred, but Caesar has divided the sexes with purpose. Each sex is used to best suit their needs and strengths.
The women of the Legion may be kinder of heart, gentled by their sex, and are more suitable as mothers. Thus many of them are expected to remain as slaves, or become priestesses, to help mother the children. They may become brood mothers, who produce children dutifully for their husband and Caesar, and create strong, new soldiers.
Marriage is a permanent partnership that forms between a male and female(s). A bond that is created after a word of approval from a superior, such as the officers or Caesar, himself. This marriage only dissolves if the woman dies; should the man die, the woman becomes a bride of Caesar.
A man may take as many wives as he pleases, without ever receiving the consent of a woman. However, a woman cannot seek to marry a man
If two or more men contend to marry the same woman, they must spar for the right to take her, the victor's trophy is his desired bride.
Men may have children without the shackles of marriage as they please, but women are regarded lowly for bearing children outside wedlock. Bastard children are representative of a whore mother, but will not be treated differently.
Legionaries may seek wives beyond the borders of the Legion, through the empire's chains of alliance, or by plucking one from her tribe by force. The Legion will typically rally in support for the collection of wives, and will demand to keep children based on its desire for growth.
A man's status can be determined by how many wives he has. The more, the merrier. |

Languages and Phrases
Fastidious about the pronunciation and use of their language, the Legion uses what is called the classical Latin pronunciation as opposed to Anglican. Approval is given to those who utilize the language to the fullest extent, removing all informal terms and shortcuts, the Legion expects language to appear as flawless and proper to whoever a legionary may be speaking to.

Eternal authority; referring to the perpetual authority of Caesar.

Rubicon

Shortening of 'crossing the Rubicon'; meaning that events have passed a point of no return and something inevitable will happen. Especially used in times of war.

Hail; meaning 'take care of yourself, be in health'; used in battle to greet a comrade.
